5 Common allergens found in the home

1. Pets: Cats and Dogs are some of the most common pets that can trigger an allergic reaction because the allergen (dander) gets all over the house and stays airborne.

2. Other pets: Specifically rodents; such as, Guinea pigs, Bunnies and Hamsters to name a few. Some people can be severely allergic to these animals.

3. Dust mites: Dust mites are microscopic bugs that live throughout our environment. One of the primary areas of exposure is the bed and bedding. The exposure to dust mite can contribute to Allergies and Asthma.

4. Hypoallergenic pets (dogs): There is a wide believe that “hypoallergenic dogs” are always safe for people who suffer from allergies. This is not often true. The proteins in most pets that allergic people react to are found in the skin and saliva of the pet.

5. Pollens: Pollens, including those from common trees and grasses are widely spread through the air. They often find their way into our home environment and can be found in house dust.

The best way to find out what triggers your allergies is to visit with an Allergist/Immunologist for allergy testing.
